Can I install Mac OS X on an SD storage device and use it as a startup volume?

This question came up at the last NCC-Mac meeting. It had me stumped, and I don't have a sufficiently large spare SD card to experiment on. Fortunately Apple Support has me covered. Take a look at "About the SD and SDXC card slot" for the answer to this question, and many more. (Spoiler below.)

Yes. Change the default partition table to GUID using Disk Utility, and format the card to use the Mac OS Extended file format to do so.
