NCC-Mac April 2017 Non-Meeting Non-Announcement

For those who didn't get the memo, there is NOT going to be an April NCC-Mac meeting. I'm playing hooky that day to attend a weather forecasting talk in Gold Beach.

Don't despair. I'm preparing a "virtual meeting" that should appear on the blog around the time of the usual Thursday meeting. Stay tuned.

The next "real" NCC-Mac meeting is scheduled for May 25, the last Thursday in May.

Post Date: Jan 23, 2017

System Requirements
400MB of available disk space
iCloud Music Library, iTunes Match, and iTunes Radio availability may vary by country
iTunes Extras require OS X version 10.10.3 or later
Windows 7 or later
64-bit editions of Windows 7 and Windows 8 require the iTunes 64-bit installer; for more information, visit www.itunes.com/download
400MB of available disk space
Screen reader support requires Window-Eyes 7.2 or later; for information about accessibility in iTunes, visit www.apple.com/accessibility
iTunes is now a 64-bit application on 64-bit versions of Windows 8 and 7. Some third-party visualizers may no longer be compatible with this version of iTunes. Please contact the developer for an updated visualizer that is compatible with iTunes 12.1 or later
Apple Music requires OS X version 10.9.5 or later

Apple has issued iTunes 12.6 in conjunction with the release of new iPads ("Apple Replaces iPad Air 2 with New 9.7-inch iPad," 21 March 2017) and iPhones (see “Apple Introduces (PRODUCT)RED iPhones, Doubles iPhone SE Storage,” 21 March 2017) with a feature that’s long been requested — the capability to watch iTunes movie rentals on any of your Apple devices (i.e., Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple TV). However, there is a delayed gratification caveat to this new feature in that it requires iOS 10.3 or tvOS 10.2 — neither of which have been released yet.

Dubbed “rent once, watch anywhere,” the feature enables you to start watching a movie on your Apple TV at home and then finish it on your next morning’s commute by streaming it on your iPhone (once all systems are updated). Previously, you could transfer rentals made on your Mac to an iOS device by performing a sync, and you couldn’t access rentals made on an Apple TV on other devices. While Apple's release information only focused on the new scrolling mode, the update also likely includes other small feature tweaks under-the-hood bug fixes and performance improvements.

The update adds the capability to drag the Show Downloads list into a standalone window, brings Paste and Go to the Safari Smart Search field’s contextual menu, and resolves an issue that caused background tabs to suddenly appear in the foreground. It also deals with a number of security vulnerabilities, including multiple memory corruption and validation issues related to WebKit, a spoofing and denial-of-service issue that existed in the handling of HTTP authentication, and address bar spoofing. Safari 10.1 is available only via Software Update. (Free, 10.10+)
