BLM Seeks Volunteers for Beach Cleanup

BANDON, Ore. – Anyone interested in sprucing up an area beach is invited to Floras Lake, south of Bandon, on Saturday, September 24 to participate in the Bureau of Land Management’s annual National Public Lands Day (NPLD) volunteer event.

Volunteers will be pulling noxious weeds, picking up litter, and removing European beach grass to improve wildlife habitat. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Individuals, families and community groups of all ages are welcome. All tools, safety equipment, and materials for the projects will be provided. Volunteers should wear outdoor work clothes and bring sunscreen and water. In appreciation for their work, volunteers will receive a T-shirt, hat, and lunch.

As the nation’s largest one-day volunteer event in support of public lands, NPLD hosts more than 2,000 sites in all 50 states and the District of Columbia with a wide array of activities. Volunteers’ one-day efforts will equal more than $15 million in improvements.

Yesterday I got hit with my first ZeoBIT MacKeeper bomber page while searching on Google. I call it a 'bomber' page because it uses JavaScript (the sworn enemy of web security) to force a popup page into your web browser, despite your popup settings. When the nasty page appeared and blared its rhetoric at me, I thought I must have found a new version of MAC Defender. But no, this is a legal Mac software suite being foisted at you via offensive marketing moron methods.

The nasty ZeoBIT MacKeeper popup page attempted to tell me that the Google result page I had open was considered potentially dangerous. Right. Therefore, I used Google again to find out what this crapware really was. I was pleased to discover that my net colleague Thomas Reed had created an excellent write-up about this crapware last week. Thomas and I work together in a Mac malware discussion group on the net. Enjoy:

Mostly what they do is take existing features of your operating system and put it in one place, and make you pay for the privilege. Answer: Although he has stepped down as CEO, Jobs was elected by Apple's board of directors to be Chairman of the Board. Apple has said that he will continue to contribute to Apple's products and directions, no doubt on his own schedule.

Question: Who is replacing Jobs? Is he any good?

Answer: Apple's board of directors announced that, following its succession plan, Jobs will be replaced by Tim Cook, previously Apple's chief operating officer. Cook has worked at Apple for 13 years, and each time Jobs has taken a medical leave of absence, Cook has ably taken over Apple's reins.

Q: Does this mean the iPhone 5/iPad 3/Mac Pro/iPod touch will be delayed?

A: No. Apple has been functioning without Jobs as the active CEO since January 2011, and they've done quite well, both in terms of releasing products and in continued stellar financial results. (See "Apple Reports Q3 2011 Record Financial Results ," 19 July 2011.)

Q: What about future products? Can anyone replace Jobs's vision?

A: No one can be the "next Steve Jobs," and neither Jobs nor Apple seems interested in finding one. Instead, new CEO Tim Cook and the rest of the executive team will guide Apple according to their own strengths. As John Gruber so aptly put it, "Jobs's greatest creation isn't any Apple product. It is Apple itself."

Q: Is Steve Jobs's health suddenly dire?

A: We don't know, and frankly, extensive speculation by anyone other than Jobs's family and doctors is irresponsible. It's possible that Jobs is pulling back to focus on other things, or that his health has gotten worse. Jobs has received treatment for pancreatic cancer and undergone a liver transplant, and he stepped away from active duty as CEO in January 2011 due to health reasons. But he also appeared on stage to introduce the iPad 2 in March 2011 and at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in June 2011.

According to an article by Walt Mossberg in the Wall Street Journal, "To be very clear, Jobs, while seriously ill, is very much alive. Extremely well-informed sources at Apple say he intends to remain involved in developing major future products and strategy and intends to be an active chairman of the board... His health is reported to be up and down, and even an active chairman isn't the same as a CEO."

Q: Is this the End of Apple as We Know It?

A: Certainly not. The executives that Jobs has surrounded himself with have been with the company for many years and have been executing Apple's vision both while Jobs has been the day-to-day CEO and during his leaves of absence.

Also, if you look at Apple's recent history of products, you'll see that years of groundwork were laid to reach the point we're at now. Consider the iPad as an example. Apple began work on the iPad well before 2007; the multi-touch interface and a few initial apps showed promise, but the company chose to take that work and develop the iPhone instead. The lessons learned from the iPhone, and the foundation for creating and running the App Store, led to the iPad in 2010. Compare that to companies like HP, Samsung, and RIM, who have unsuccessfully rushed tablets to market since the iPad was introduced.

We're certain Apple has a secret roadmap that extends a few years into the future. And the company has been actively working to sustain its unique corporate ethos. In 2009, former Dean of the Yale School of Management Joel Podolny joined Apple to head Apple University, which, according to an extensive feature in Fortune magazine is an internal program that documents and teaches how the company functions and makes important decisions.

Of course it's possible, even likely, that Apple will change over the years, but that's to be expected. The Apple of today is significantly different than the Apple of 1985, when Jobs last left Apple, the Apple of 1996 when he returned to Apple, and even the Apple of 2006, before the iPhone was released. But change is one of the things Apple has done best.

Apple has enhanced its recycling program to add a new "reuse" option that pays owners of existing iPhones, iPads, Mac or PC desktop or notebook computers a fair market value for their old equipment, paid via an Apple Gift Card.

Apple continues to offer a variety of recycling programs: a place to dump unwanted electronics of any kind at its Cupertino, California head quarters (which it has operated since 2002); free recycling of Mac batteries at any of its retail stores; and free pickup and disposal of any brand of computer or display contracted through WeRecycle!, which user can obtain a free prepaid shipping label from at www.werecycle.com.

Now, users who own an iOS device or a computer from any manufacturer can obtain a credit for the fair market value of that device, calculated by PowerOn, a third party company Apple contract with to run the reuse program.

While recycling old products dismantles them and harvests valuable components such as metal, plastic and glass for recycled use in new products, reuse is an even greener option, as it extends the useful life of products that have value in the second hand market.

"If your product qualifies for reuse — meaning it has monetary value — you'll receive an Apple Gift Card equivalent to its fair market value as determined by PowerON," Apple states on its new recycling program website.

"You can use the gift card for eligible purchases at any U.S. Apple Retail Store or the U.S. Apple Online Store. If your product does not have monetary value, we'll recycle it at no cost to you."

Users can get a preliminary valuation for their old devices online, then arrange to ship them to PowerOn at no cost. The company will then contact the user if the apprised value is different than what was quoted online, a figure based on the user's own description of the product's condition.

If the user chooses not to accept the final value, it will be returned at no charge. Otherwise, PowerOn will arrange to credit the user via an Apple Gift Card within three weeks of receipt. The company also securely erases all data remaining on the devices while preparing them for resale.

PowerOn's estimated value of a functional, first generation iPad in very good condition is $165, for example. Users may likely be able to find their own second hand buyer for relatively new products in good condition, and fetch a higher price.

However, for older devices with some damage or dysfunctional features, the reuse option may provide an easier, more convenient option that still recoups some value they can then reinvest in new Apple gear.

Apple on Monday issued a set of updates to its suite of iLife '11 applications, including iMovie, iPhoto, GarageBand, iWeb and iDVD.

iMovie 9.0.4

Apple's update to iMovie fixes a variety of problems, including opening projects imported from iMovie for iOS; an audio adjustment issue; a performance issue for video clips with keywords and a slow launch when working with large iPhoto libraries.

The 76.2MB download requires Mac OS X 10.6.7 and is recommended for all users of iMovie '11.

iPhoto 9.1.5

The iPhoto update is also recommended for all users and weighs 220.83MB. Mac OS X 10.6.7 is required.

Fixes include: corrections to the Adjust Time and Date command; resolution of a scrolling issue with Event Titles; fixing an issue with a Classic slideshow; deleting photos from a web album using the contextual menu no longer deletes them from the library and resolution of an issue with the Revert to Original command.

GarageBand 6.0.4

GarageBand 6.0.4 fixes an issue with lesson downloads from the GarageBand Lesson Store. It also corrects issues with tempo-based effects falling out of sync and resolves problems with Magic GarageBand project files.

The update is a 53.72MB download requiring Mac OS X 10.6.7 and is recommended for all users of GarageBand '11.

iWeb 3.0.4

Apple's decision to update iWeb to version 3.0.4 came as a surprise to some, as Apple indicated in a FAQ last month that iWeb publishing will get the ax when the MobileMe service is shuttered permanently on June 30, 2012.

IWeb has not received a major revision since Apple released iLife '09 in January 2009. That update added new iWeb Widgets, such as iSight video and photos, a countdown timer, YouTube video and RSS feeds and integrated FTP publishing. Apple quietly bundled the older versions of iWeb and iDVD into iLife '11 when it was released last October.

The release notes for iWeb 3.0.4 do not indicate any specific changes, noting only that the update "improves overall stability and addresses a number of minor issues." The 178.57MB download is recommended for all iWeb 3 users and requires Mac OS X 10.6.4 or later.

iDVD 7.1.2

Monday's update to iDVD improves reliability of imported iPhoto '11 slideshows. fixes a problem that could prevent files from re-linking and addresses an issue that could cause iDVD to use all available CPU capacity when searching for missing files.

iDVD 7.1.2 is recommended for all iDVD 7 users. The 36.12MB download requires Mac OS X 10.6.8.

Apple also offes iPhoto, GarageBand and iMovie individually in the Mac App Store, though it has chosen not to make iWeb and iDVD available.

Safe Download Version Adds Manual Definitions Update

The Mac Observer's code wizard Adam Christianson has been hard at work making Safe Download Version even better, and this latest update adds the ability to update to the most recent definition list file from within the application. Safe Download Version is a Mac OS X application that shows the version number for Apples safe files definition list, along with when the list was last updated on user's computers.

Snow Leopard users that installed Apple's Security Update 2011-003 can get daily safe file updates Safari uses to help make sure malware doesn't find its way onto their Macs. Apple doesn't, however, offer an easy way to tell when your definitions list was last updated, or what list version number is installed, so The Mac Observer whipped up Safe Download Version to handle that task for you.

Safe Download Version is a Mac OS X application that shows which safe downloads definition list version is installed, along with the date and time the definition list was last updated on your computer. The brand new version 0.4.1 update added the ability to manually update to the latest version of Apple's definitions list.

Apple released Security Update 2011-003 in response to a trojan horse malware threat called MacDefender. The trojan horse looks like a legit application that scans your Mac for viruses.

MacDefender displays dialogs claiming it found malware, and then asks users for their credit card account information. To help reinforce the illusion that it found viruses, it forces Web browser windows to open to porno Web sites.

As new variants of MacDefender hit the Web, Apple will continue to update its safe download list with new malware definitions. Macs with Security Update 2011-003 installed will auto-check for the new definitions daily.

Safe Download Version 0.4.1 is free and available for download at the TMO Web site.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection

"Malware" is an abbreviated term for malicious software. Malware includes viruses, worms, trojan horses, and other types of software that can damage the software on your system or violate your privacy. Malware can be installed on your computer when you download content or applications from the Internet, via email, text messaging, or websites. Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard checks for known malware and alerts you so that you do not accidentally install it on your system.

Files downloaded via applications such as Safari, iChat, and Mail are checked for safety at the time that they are opened. If a file is identified as containing known malware, the system will display a dialog that alerts you to move it to the Trash. You should empty the Trash to finalize the removal of the file.

Apple maintains a list of known malicious software that is used during the safe download check to determine if a file contains malicious software. The list is stored locally, and with Security Update 2011-003 is updated daily by a background process.

If you do not wish to receive these updates, you can disable daily update by unchecking "Automatically update safe downloads list" in the Security pane, in System Preferences. This option appears in Security preferences after Security Update 2011-003 is installed.

Security Update 2011-003 provides additional protection by checking for the MacDefender malware and its known variants. If MacDefender malware is found, the system will quit this malware, delete any persistent files, and correct any modifications made to configuration or login files. After MacDefender is identified and removed, the message below will be displayed the next time an administrator account logs in.

How to avoid or remove Mac Defender malware

A recent phishing scam has targeted Mac users by redirecting them from legitimate websites to fake websites which tell them that their computer is infected with a virus. The user is then offered Mac Defender "anti-virus" software to solve the issue.

This "anti-virus" software is malware (i.e. malicious software). Its ultimate goal is to get the user's credit card information which may be used for fraudulent purposes.

The most common names for this malware are MacDefender, MacProtector and MacSecurity.

In the coming days, Apple will deliver a Mac OS X software update that will automatically find and remove Mac Defender malware and its known variants. The update will also help protect users by providing an explicit warning if they download this malware.

In the meantime, the Resolution section below provides step-by-step instructions on how to avoid or manually remove this malware.

Resolution

How to avoid installing this malware

If any notifications about viruses or security software appear, quit Safari or any other browser that you are using. If a normal attempt at quitting the browser doesn't work, then Force Quit the browser.

In some cases, your browser may automatically download and launch the installer for this malicious software. If this happens, cancel the installation process; do not enter your administrator password. Delete the installer immediately using the steps below.

Go into the Downloads folder or your preferred download location.
Drag the installer to the Trash.
Empty the Trash.

How to remove this malware

If the malware has been installed, we recommend the following actions:

Do not provide your credit card information under any circumstances.
Use the Removal Steps below.

Removal steps

Move or close the Scan Window
Go to the Utilities folder in the Applications folder and launch Activity Monitor
Choose All Processes from the pop up menu in the upper right corner of the window
Under the Process Name column, look for the name of the app and click to select it; common app names include: MacDefender, MacSecurity or MacProtector
Click the Quit Process button in the upper left corner of the window and select Quit
Quit Activity Monitor application
Open the Applications folder
Locate the app ex. MacDefender, MacSecurity, MacProtector or other name
Drag to Trash, and empty Trash

Malware also installs a login item in your account in System Preferences. Removal of the login item is not necessary, but you can remove it by following the steps below.

Open System Preferences, select Accounts, then Login Items
Select the name of the app you removed in the steps above ex. MacDefender, MacSecurity, MacProtector
Click the minus button

Use the steps in the "How to avoid installing this malware" section above to remove the installer from the download location.

Note: Apple provides security updates for the Mac exclusively through Software Update and the Apple Support Downloads site. User should exercise caution any time they are asked to enter sensitive personal information online.

Since we have such a small number of regular attendees, it makes little sense to keep holding these events after the library has closed, so starting in May we have moved the start time to 4:30 PM.

Broadband Comes to Langlois

Well, they haven't made it up our road yet, but at least the Langlois Library has got their broadband Wi-Fi up and running. I gave it some exercise Thursday evening and it's quite fast, compared to other Wi-Fi hotspots I've tried out near here. There is still one killer bug that still has to be worked out. Their cordless phone's frequency looks to be too close to that of their wireless router, so anytime someone uses the phone, the wireless network goes bye-bye. I'm guessing that when both the phone's and router's "channels" are set as far apart as possible, the problem will go away.

That will not be a problem at the next NCC-Mac meeting (January 27, 6:00 PM). We just won't answer the phone. If you have something online to share with the group, we can, for the first time in a long while, reach outside the room.

I'll be summarizing Steve Jobs' keynote from the Apple Special Event of October 20 (Back to the Mac).

If you want to see Jobs' whole 90+ minute presentation, bring to the meeting a flash drive or hard disk that has room for 1GB, or search for "Apple Keynotes" at the iTunes Store.

The next meeting of the North Curry County Macintosh Users is Thursday September 30, 6:00 PM at the Langlois Library. I have prepared a short canned demo of how to (and how not to) make a Magic iDVD. Roll on the floor laughing as I fumble through this feature of iDVD for the very first time.

Also, If anyone has any more movie projects to share, bring them in. Just be sure they're on physical media. There'll be no YouTubeing on the library's dialup connection.

Here is a list of upcoming flu shot clinics being held in Coos and Curry counties. As in the past few years GetAFluShot.com is the organization administering the shots. This year's vaccine adds immunization against the H1N1 strain, a potentially nasty one. Because of this the CDC is recommending that every eligible individual gets a flu shot this year.

My 15-seconds of fame!

Apple just released iTunes 10.0, and an amusing thing happened. All (or at least most) Automator actions that talk to iTunes broke. The Automator application does not even acknowledge that these actions exist. This is because Automator actions, and Mac applications as well, keep track of their version information in a text file tucked away inside their "bundle" folder, a folder that looks like a single file as far as the user is concerned.

The Automator actions that control iTunes need iTunes to be version 4.6 or higher. "10.0" is alphabetically less than "4.6", and Automator hides these actions from the user. This is similar to the same of foresight that caused the Y2K problem.

How did I get my 15-seconds of fame? I figured out one way to regain use of these wayward Automator Actions, and posted this solution to MAC OS X HINTS. Look here if you want to read the article and its comments.

By the way, I almost got 30-minutes of fame earlier this year when I appeared as an extra in a TV commercial featuring Tiger Woods. Unfortunately, Tiger had his sex scandal thing, and the commercial was probably never aired. That's Show Biz.

Due in part to the clutter from the upcoming silent auction in Langlois, the next meeting of the North Curry County Macintosh Users is being held Thursday August 26 in the "Freedom of Speech" room (the big meeting room) of the PORT ORFORD Library. Yes, we'll have REAL WI-FI this time! Because of scheduling constraints, the start time has to be pushed out to 6:30 PM.
